Five hundred kilometers north of Oslo, Trondheim might seem an odd place to look for 18th century music manuscripts. However, the city was flourishing, thanks to the magic combination of mineral resources and trade, and a large merchant class developed. The city's Gunnerus Library has a music collection containing the four works presented here. Apparently, none of the composers are Norwegian (one work, the weakest of the four, is anonymous), but for the most part, the works are interesting. The strongest is the Sonata a cembalo, violino, è violoncello of Johan Heinrich Berlin, the son of the city's director of music. Composed around 1780, it is quite a modern, Haydn-like work, but its instrumental forces recall the late Baroque. The opening Violin Concerto in G major, Op. 1, No. 9, of Joseph Meck is a competent Baroque concerto in the Vivaldian vein, and Vivaldi himself is represented by a concerto with birdsong that also circulated in England. The Baroque Ensemble of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra is just note-perfect here, moving easily among the various styles here, which are not all Baroque, with idiomatic playing. Not so idiomatic is 2L's church sound, which has wowed audiophiles but doesn't fit with the environments in which this music would have been played. Nonetheless, this is an intriguing examination of an urban musical scene that has hardly been explored, and it is listenable on its own merits.
