At just 25, Yung Lean is practically a veteran of the current rap scene. After seven albums and almost ten years in the business, he’s now released his eighth, Stardust. This album is marked by an almost childish spirit, a false innocence that he often employs, despite nearly dying of an overdose in 2015 at only 19 years old. A life well lived nourishes the lyrics of this album, which is tinged with drama and, as always, filled with constant references to the culture of the 2000s. You can almost hear the influence of the 8-bit sounds from the video games he mentions in SummerTime Blood, and the subtle folk influence on Paradise Lost (which is similar to the music he makes under the name Jonatan Leandoer96, his more soothing alias). On the first track of the album, Bliss, FKA Twigs makes an appearance for a cheeky collaboration, while Skrillex lends a musical hand on two tracks, including Lips, which is influenced by grime sounds. The well-conceived music and featured artists create an incredibly coherent final work full of contradictory emotions. This young veteran still has a lot left to give.
