Noted for his fresh reassessments of the standard repertoire and close adherence to the details in the scores, Daniele Gatti brings his insights and acumen to three great tone poems, the "Roman Trilogy" by Ottorino Respighi: Feste Romane, Pini di Roma, and Fontane di Roma. Leading the Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra -- a Roman ensemble that takes special pride in its historical association with Respighi -- Gatti presents these popular works with rhythmic precision and vigor, and draws exceptionally vivid colors from the orchestra without gilding the lily. These readings may seem leaner and more transparent than more familiar, lush interpretations, but Gatti is faithful to Respighi's requirements and adds nothing to thicken the orchestral textures or reinforce the softest passages. On the whole, Gatti keeps the tempi brisk, with minimal rubato, and his firm pacing gives the music backbone and increased excitement. Previously released on Conifer in 1997, this 2004 BMG reissue has wonderful sound and great resonance, improved a little in the remastering. However, the frequency range of the original recording is still extremely wide, so frequent volume adjustments are needed to catch the softest passages. For undisturbed enjoyment, then, headphones are recommended.
