Much like Prokofiev, pianist-composer Olli Mustonen leads a double career as a pianist and a composer – triple even, if you consider that he also conducts every now and then, exactly like Prokofiev –, which led him to perform with the Berliner Philharmonie, the New York Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, to only name three of the most prestigious orchestras. His repertoire not only covers the greatest works but also, and most importantly, lesser known compositions, by Alkan, Respighi or Scriabin for instance, and he has become a staunch advocate of Prokofiev. Here is his interpretation of the great Russian composer’s Second and Fifth Concertos. These are two works of his first maturity, one from 1923 – granted the original concerto dates back to 1913 but the score was lost and Prokofiev wrote it back from a reduction for piano, with numerous alterations – and the other from 1932 – created by the composer himself and Furtwängler, with the Berliner Philarmonie, in the presence of Hindemith and Stravinsky. Mustonen draws from Prokofiev’s playing style, considered at the time to be “made of steel”, which can be verified in the composer’s existing recordings and is generally required by piano writing itself. © SM/Qobuz
