In 2007, Jean-Marie Machado became the leader of Danzas, an unconventional band that brought jazz to many unexpected destinations. Pictures for Orchestra began its life on stage. On record, the project is made up of 9 tracks for orchestra, which not only highlight the band’s ability to play with musical genres, but also reveals the creativity of its many soloists. On the album’s liner notes, the piano player explains that “the word ‘orchestra’, which I like very much, stood at the basis of the project. Then came the English concept of Pictures for Orchestra. I wanted these pictures to be a set of highly contrasted momentums of sound with their own narrative.”
Machado works with Cécile Grenier and Séverine Morfin (violins), Guillaume Martigne (cello), Didier Ithursarry (accordion), Stéphane Guillaume (flute), Jean-Charles Richard (saxophone), Elodie Pasquier (clarinet) and François Thuillier (tuba). “The soloists’ sensitivity is the starting point of each piece played by the orchestra, like an ensemble of characters whose stories are told through the compositions. It is an opus of sounds, of men and of women, full of poetry and emotion. The piano breathes throughout its solos, leaving room for our emotions to settle, and at the end a ‘concert-like encore,’ gives us a last occasion to dance as the orchestra’s name invites us to do.” Both soloists and composers are crucial. Jean-Marie Machado pays tribute to Robert Schumann (W.1855) and Astor Piazzola (Vuelvo Al Sur), both integral to his musical identity. Machado’s touch on the piano is exquisite, always able to alternate nostalgia and modernity, petulance and euphoria. A magnificent album © Max Dembo/Qobuz
