Established by German pianist Nils Frahm in 2016, Piano Day is held yearly on the 29th of March, the 88th day of the year (in reference to the number of standard piano keys). Renowned for his humility, the Berlin-based composer sums up the project simply: "It can't hurt to celebrate the piano once a year and all those who bring it to life: composers, performers, builders, tuners, movers, and most importantly: the listeners!" This celebration, which has spread worldwide, inspires many events across the globe. The very first compilation dedicated to Piano Day has been released for all piano enthusiasts, to mark the 7th anniversary of this event. What better label than Nils Frahm’s Leiter to get the show on the road.
The 32 pieces on this record all revolve around this famous kaleidoscope of neoclassical compositions. This movement, led by Nils Frahm and Iceland’s Ólafur Arnalds, seems to have attracted a large number of young musicians over the past decade. Almost all of these pianists have adopted an easy-to-recognise style: simple austere melodies; arpeggiated basslines; increased use of sustain pedals; subtle electronic layers and microphones positioned closer to the strings to capture the instrument’s granularity. Although many may be averse to such a standardisation, it can’t be denied that these pieces are truly hypnotic and capable of suspending reality. This record isn’t just about admiring the elegance of Ravel, or the experiments of Cage and Legeti.
