Ringing, hypnotic guitars and stellar voices, honky-tonk tracks with rare, psychedelic distortions and accelerations make Out of Range the crackly soundtrack to an opium-laced joyride. Ploughing the furrow of youngian folk and blues à la J.J. Cale or Dire Straits, this fifth work has something different about it. After the punk Dim Light (2009), which had a strong eighties influence, the obscure Californian group reshuffled the deck. Alongside Carrie Keith and Dylan Sharp, the multi-instrumentist Henry Barnes has cremated the frippery which decked out the previous Dream All Over. In a similar vein to their elders Mazzy Star (less Hope Sandoval's celestial voice) or Silver Jews, Gun Outfit is sculpting a dry, wild, more addictive kind of vista. With no frills. © CS/Qobuz
