The Fil [The Thread] – hers – is still there. Intact. Unadulterated. It is the thread that she spun twelve years ago, and which saw her pulled into the public eye. The world of Chanson Française, which hasn't known such popularity for years, was left gobsmacked at this extraterrestrial's way of stretching and reshaping the language, its sounds and rhythms, as no-one else could. A strong personality which could not but cause a clash between adoring fans and overweening enemies on the scale of the Battle of Hernani... With her fifth album, Camille is holding on tight to her Fil. Written near to Villeneuve-Lès-Avignon, Ouï is a seed planted in a rhythmic furrow. It grows outward from a rhythm like a heartbeat, gradually unfurling its song and sounds. Because what you get from Camille's singing is both form and content. She has a way of making her work unique and setting herself apart from her predecessors, and even of her contemporaries. The rhythm at the heart of her songs is fed by many roots. Above all, the acrobatics in her voice are fuelled by folklore and traditional music (starkness, simplicity, austerity). Her voice walks. Then jumps. Then flies. Then stretches out. And starts again. The intense high-wire act plays itself out in every song. Sous le sable which opens this magnificent record perfectly reflects each unique aspect of Camille's work, in all its specificity, and it showcases her overall approach brilliantly. But above all, Ouï evokes a strong, physical sensation. And that is something quite rare in modern music. © MD/Qobuz
