At the center of the cover, of the circle, of the rocks, of the day: Ben Howard. Noonday Dream, a midday dream, took four years to burst out, despite the pressure from avid fans lacking fire and songs to burn on the beach. Third of the overexposed hermit from the Devon, the opus draws vivid string landscapes through well-arranged spaces and mixed textures. The croaky lyrics spread slowly. From the acoustic and successful pop of Every Kingdom, the shy thirty-something drifts toward the sound landscapes he cleared with Corsaire, founded with Mickey Smith. A child from the wild coasts of Cornwall, surfer, photographer, sound architect with whom he records here. More sober without being radical, Noonday Dream will probably allow Howard to avoid falling into easy comparisons with mushy singers and the stadiums people want to put him in.
