Nighttime Anytime is a four-track taster for the Constantines' first record for Sub Pop. The first two tracks are taken from Shine a Light: "Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright)" is a howling slab of neo post-punk that calls to mind an American Gang of Four with the slashing guitars and angular rhythm or maybe a British Afghan Whigs for the passionate vocals and overall angst; "Tank Commander" is slightly more subdued, but no one would ever mistake the Constantines as happy-go-lucky. The remaining two tracks are unavailable elsewhere. "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" is a cover of the Talking Heads' track from More Songs About Buildings and Food. The vocals ape David Byrne quite convincingly and the band whips up a tuneful racket. The only problem with the song is that it sheds too much light on the band's inability to come up with a melody even remotely as good elsewhere. A case in point: the fourth track, "Hotline Operator," a seemingly endless droning number that lasts for five minutes too long. The Constantines are not one of Sub Pop's best pick-ups in recent years. They should probably be sent back down to the minors for more seasoning.
