Andrés Orozco-Estrada has been recording with the Tonkünstler-Orchester for Oehms Classics since his appointment as principal conductor in 2009, and they have focused on the symphonies of the Romantic era. This 2015 CD of Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A major, "Italian," and the Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, "Reformation," is a follow-up to their 2014 release of the composer's youthful Symphony No. 1 in C minor and the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, "Scottish," and the performances are superb, with crisp articulation, powerful expression, and high energy. Even though the reproduction is standard digital, the sound of this disc is remarkably clear and spacious, offering the kind of depth and detail one would expect from Oehms' highly rated multichannel recordings. Indeed, one would like to have these performances on hybrid SACD to make a complete audiophile cycle with Orozco-Estrada's recording of the Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, "Lobgesang," also performed by the Tonkünstler-Orchester but released on the Preiser label in 2011.
