In his monumental work L’Encre de la mélancolie, the philosopher Jean Starobinski explains at length how the feeling of melancholy has been described as one of the body's humours since Antiquity: this "black bile" which was the indicator of an evil power in which artists of all periods have indulged. This very strong and persistent feeling when faced with disease, war, epidemics and romantic disillusionment has been widely described in literature, fine art and, of course, music, as this album shows. The subtle layers of melancholy presented here range from simple disappointment to the darkest despair, introduced by a music that is in tune with our times, where we are threatened with global warming and the destruction of our ecosystems, and as the warning signs of the grave dangers facing humanity as a whole.
Choral conductor Adrián Rodríguez van der Spoel, who was born in Argentina, moved to the Netherlands where he founded Música Temprana, an ensemble that focuses mainly on the musical repertoire from the colonial period in Latin America. Together with his singers, he has decided to awake our consciences by holding up a mirror between 15th century Spain and our own period, with a selection of Spanish melodies and extracts from the famous collection of Canto de la Sibila describing a God implacable in the face of the destruction of the world. Even under the protection of the Virgin Mary, it dies buried under a rain of ashes.
Here is a recording that resounds like the tocsin warning through a musical vision of extreme modesty, expressing a diffuse desolation, which is perhaps that of our powerlessness in the face of our current issues. © François Hudry/Qobuz
