The reason “Stabat Mater in F major” by Simon Mayr (1763-1845) is presented here for the first time in world premiere recording is partly because it is the result of a recent reconstruction from two Marian and Mayrian sources; in this case, two manuscripts that overlap at times, and differ on other occasions, with additions and modifications – a habit of Mayr who frequently re-adapted his own works depending on the circumstances, staffing, available soloists, adding arias, removing the most difficult parts… The most remarkable aspect of this Stabat Mater is the profusion of instrumental soloist parts that unceasingly answer to vocal interventions, creating an effect of great beauty and, most importantly, supreme originality. It’s a shame that the Austrian-born composer, who moved to Italy and became Italian in 1802, isn’t more celebrated today, as he was a great star during his lifetime. His language − we assume − continued the tradition of Mozart and Haydn, while also pointing to Beethoven – various sources for this Stabat Mater date from after 1803. As a complement to the programme, the album also contains two religious works in the same Marian vein. © SM/Qobuz
