After working with producer Mitchell Froom and engineer Tchad Blake on KIKO, David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos decided to form a separate entity they dubbed the Latin Playboys. Setting themselves free to explore every studio possibility at hand, this debut is a glorious coming together of a traditionalist's sense of place combined with a surrealist's quest for dreams (or perhaps a dreamer's quest for surreality).
The songs are firmly rooted in the Los Lobos member's Mexican-American background, but they've been chopped and fragmented down to an essential core. The mix is full of extremes--quiet instruments can be in your face, while loud ones bellow from another room. The overall effect sets everything on its head without ever losing its sense of direction. This is what it sounds like when you mix one hundred years from now with one hundred years ago. It sounds front-and-center, right now.
