Coolheaded Maryland R&B singer Brent Faiyaz stays in a loop of nostalgia for much of his first mixtape, Larger Than Life. Along with appearances by Y2K R&B fixtures Timbaland and Missy Elliott, Faiyaz channels late-'90s radio R&B production on the staggered percussion beats of exceptional tracks like "Best Time" and "Moment of Your Life." Throwbacks to NEPTUNES-styled instrumentals are intermixed with thick synth funk on "Upset" and minimal rhythmic skeletons and ambient textures on the dire yet lovely "WY@." Larger Than Life is light fun for the most part, and the retro styles are counterbalanced by blunt-edged rap features from Lil Gray, A$AP Rocky, Babyface Ray, and others.
