Francisco Guerrero is one of those names known to almost everyone who has ever sung in a choir, but it's just a few of his pieces that have penetrated the choral repertory. In general, his music is much less well known than that of Victoria or Morales, the other major figures of the Spanish Renaissance. He ought to be prime fodder for interdisciplinary courses, inasmuch as he traveled to the Middle East, observing musical customs along the way, was attacked by pirates on the way back to Spain, and ended up destitute and in debtors' prison until his former cathedral employers bailed him out; he wrote a book about the whole experience. His music is striking and often very accessible, which may account for the fact that amateur choirs are a bit ahead of professionals in performing it. Guerrero favors simple, sometimes almost minimal homophonic textures that do not, however, foreclose grand effusions of polyphonic technique in a work like the Regina caeli a 8 recorded here. Although most of the conducting duties fall to Tallis Scholars director Peter Phillips, the sound of the group El León de Oro diverges quite a bit from that of English cathedral choirs. It's a substantial (38-voice) group that generates a rich, textured sound in the Iglesia del Real Monasterio de San Salvador de Cornellana, Salas, Asturias, Spain, and this brings to life the remarkable textural and emotional range of Guerrero's music. A selection of pieces from the Canciones y villanescas espirituales -- pieces based on secular models in a delightful colloquial Spanish -- rounds out the program; it is nice to have these, although a performance that added a bit of secular swing, such as Jordi Savall might have given, might have been desirable. A fine release of interest to anyone who has encountered Guerrero, but especially to choral directors, who will find a rich source of fresh material.
