Listening to Give Out But Don't Give Up just once is enough to convince you that in 1993 Bobby Gillespie was playing his old vinyls Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street by the Rolling Stones on repeat. Three years after the hit Screamadelica, a dance-rock classic with psychedelic flavours, the brain behind Primal Scream completely changed course and released a seventies rock album combined with soul and blues. To give a more natural feel, he invited Tom Dowd on board, the great Southern sound engineer from the golden age of Atlantic Records, as well as some big names of the past such as pianist Jim Dickinson, drummer Roger Hawkins and experts from Muscle Shoals. As for the icing on the cake: this fourth Primal Scream album was recorded in the legendary Ardent studio in Memphis! However, the takes were then reworked by the producer George Drakoulias so as to give a more “modern” sound to this trip to the past… 25 years later, the recordings released during the Ardent era have resurfaced and Gillespie can publish them as he likes! Give Out But Don't Give Up: The Original Memphis Recordings reveals, for the first time, the overtly gospel, country and soul sides of Primal Scream. With lively brass sections, fleshy rhythms and animated choirs, one would think that this really was an album from the past.
