Koffee gained recognition within the Jamaican music scene after winning a Grammy for her EP Rapture in 2020 (the first for such a young artist and the first for a female). Her first album draws inspiration from Bob Marley. For example, on x10, she overlays her vocals on a sample from Redemption Song, one of the reggae legend’s biggest hits, much like Lauryn Hill did with Turn Your Lights Down Low in 1999. It’s no coincidence that Koffee has found success outside the Caribbean island’s borders, becoming a sensation in the world of pop after her first track Burning in 2017. She’s got everyone captivated by her versatility.

This first studio album, more mellow and less militant that her first EP, once again demonstrates the Jamaican’s vocal dexterity. She’s able to keep her voice light and swift, and her music features sung passages as well as toasts, which follow the style of the island’s great singjay artists (Barrington Levy and Sizzla). Musically, she keeps one foot firmly within the boundaries of the reggae roots revival instigated by her mentors, Chronixx and Protoje, however, she still flirts with the afrobeat style popular in West Africa. This is evident on tracks such as West IndiesLockdown and Pull Up, all produced by Jae5, the man behind the hits from Burna Boy and Mr Eazi. She’s navigating through no man’s land, dipping her toes into dancehall, roots, hip-hop and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. She sings, chants and switches up her flow with impressive ease; Koffee is definitely onto something. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
