Below the melodic and summery indie rock surface of this third album, Australian three-piece band Middle Kids delve, as the title suggests, into an exploration of faith and the interplay between belief and human relationships. "The spirit of each song comes from us just engaging in life," explains guitarist, lead singer and songwriter Hannah Joy. "Songs that were born out of that and born out of the existential angst of that and the pain and beauty of that too." Faith Crisis Pt 1 was recorded over five weeks in the English coastal town of Eastbourne, co-produced by Jonathan Gilmore (The 1975, beabadoobee) and the band's bassist/guitarist Tim Fitz, who said it also felt "kind of like a faith stance to keep making art and making music" amidst the overwhelming chaos and sadness of the outside world. It's true that the combination of catchy hooks ("Dramamine," "The Blessings," "Your Side, Forever"), layered guitars ("Terrible News") and Harry Day's propulsive drumming ("Petition," "Highlands") contains a frenetic energy that longs to be played live to a crowd of dancing fans. This effervescence ebbs and flows with slower, more minimal songs like the wistful "Bootleg Firecracker'' and closing piano ballad "All in my Head" which shows off the record's introspective side with the husky and impassioned voice of Gang of Youth's Dave Le'aupepe, singing lyrics like "I need something to arrive/ To tell me with certainty/ Is it all in my head, in my head, oh darling?" Thus Faith Crisis Pt 1 is encapsulated by the music video to "Dramamine" and the respite of a retro, pastel-coloured party, reminding us that when the world is on fire we still have each other. © Ciara Rivers/Qobuz
