Since 2007, the American group has been consistently productive, with no less than thirteen albums, including their first release in 2001, and yet Orgone isn't letting up. The members' have proven their capacity to renew their style, revisiting funk and soul as a foundation for surpassing all constraints, to the point that now it is rather to be expected. Chimera doesn't disappoint in this regard. Testifying to this is the single "Basilik," based on a strict and solid duo of bass and drums that allows the synthesizers and rhythmic guitars, full of wah-wah, to fully express themselves. It's not surprising that The Meters come to mind, with audible references such as a taste for very neat arrangements and economical funk structures that Orgone and the seminal group share. Then, there's the embellishments, the freer layers that are added on to form several noteworthy tracks, such as "Peace For You" and "Parasols." Yet Chimera goes even further still. There is the influence of West African Highlife on "Zum Zum," pure, unadulterated soul on the instrumental "The Husk," and the curious closing track "Coronado" summons traditional Mexican rhythms and garnishes them with Americana elements. The five Californians deliver an album that is far from a mere exercise in style or amusement—the experimentations and sixties sound create a diversity of atmospheres that draws the listener in exceptionally well. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
