The founder of the Lausanne Bach Festival, Japanese organ-player Kei Koito came to the attention of the general public thanks to unforgettable recordings of Buxtehude, Nivers and Johann Sebastian Bach. Her illuminating approach to the music of the Cantor is shot through with a powerful breath and a depth of engagement that few musicians can attain. Choosing her instruments with care (remember her magnificent recording of The Art of Fugue on Bordeaux's famous Dom Bedos, which was restored by Pascal Quoirin), she has recorded a series of albums for various labels, such as Claves and deutsche harmonia mundi, which is publishing this compilation of famous works by Bach.
Kei Koito's organological research is a natural complement to her insatiable curiosity about the music of past masters; and about the contemporary music which forms a key part of her repertoire, including works by the likes of Ligeti, Maxwell Davies, Jolivet, Stockhausen or François-Bernard Mâche. Born into a family of artists in Japan, Kei Koito learned to sing and play the piano and cello, before dedicating herself fully to the organ from the age of 16. She studied at the Geneva Conservatoire with Pierre Segond, and then worked with Xavier Darasse, Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini and Reinhard Goebel. She also took classes in composition, orchestration and analysis with Eric Gaudibert in Geneva. © François Hudry/Qobuz
