Mary Weiss was best known as the lead singer of the Shangri-Las, one of the most notable girl group of the 1960s. Born in Queens, New York, Weiss and her sister Betty met their bandmates, twins Mary Ann and Margie Gasner in high school, where performance at school dances and talent shows earned them the attention of local producer Artie Ripp. While their first single in December 1963 was a flop, "Leader of the Pack" the following year became a #1 hit, and bolstered their street-wise image. More tales of adolescent melodrama and heartbreak would follow but Weiss would leave music at the end of the decade, triumphantly returning in 2007 with her lone solo record, Dangerous Game, co-produced by Greg Cartwright of Reigning Sound, who performed as the backing band.
