About Playlist

Seiji Ozawa, who died on 6 February 2024 at the age of 88, was a symbol of Japanese excellence in the understanding and interpretation of Western classical music. The Japanese conductor was one of the last great exponents of twentieth-century orchestral conducting. Born in 1935 in the then Japanese-ruled province of Manchuria in China, Ozawa began learning to play the piano at an early age, before a rugby accident that left him with two broken fingers shattered his dreams of a career as a pianist. But every cloud has a silver lining, and the apprentice musician eventually showed great talent for conducting. His first success came in 1959 when he flew to France and won 1st prize in the Besançon International Competition. He began to associate with the greatest conductors of the time, including Charles Munch and Herbert von Karajan - whom he considered his master and model - and briefly assisted Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic during the 1961-1962 season. In 1965, at the dawn of his thirties, he was entrusted to take the reins of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which he conducted for 4 years before taking over the San Francisco Orchestra. The ultimate accolade came in 1973 when, for the first time, he was offered the baton of one of the American "Big Five": the Boston Symphony. Ozawa remained Music Director for almost 30 years, an exceptional longevity. His last post was as Director of the Vienna Opera in 2002, before taking semi-active retirement in 2010.
