About Playlist
A founder of minimalism in the late 1960s, along with his contemporary Steve Reich, the American composer Philip Glass, born in 1937 in Baltimore, stands out for his unique style born of his knowledge of Western music (from the Middle Ages to Romanticism), of the various Indian ragas and their modes, and of North African rhythms that taught him the art of melodic repetition. Whether we like him or not, he has been able to make a name for himself and establish his reputation as a composer despite the controversy surrounding his music, which has nevertheless been successful enough to be used as a television advert, a theme tune or a sound illustration for a feature film or a big screen movie (Martin Scorsese's Kundun, Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream and Errol Morris's documentary The Fog of War are still making an impact); because Philip Glass appeals to a wide audience of non-specialists, lovers of rock and popular music alike.
