About Playlist

A tribute to Maurizio Pollini: Born in Milan in 1942, Maurizio Pollini's career took off at the age of only 18 when he won first prize in the Warsaw Chopin Competition - Arthur Rubinstein, one of the members of the jury, is said to have stated, "He plays better than any of us". With an exceptional discography, mostly released by Deutsche Grammophon, Pollini was one of the greatest interpreters of the Romantic repertoire and counts Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann and Liszt among his favourite composers, occasionally branching out to Bach and modern Russian composers such as Stravinsky too. A virtuoso pianist, he also did not shy away from the complexity of contemporary scores by Boulez, Webern or Schönberg and he played with some of the world's greatest orchestras, including the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Maurizio Pollini died in Milan on March 23rd 2024 at the age of 82. Photo © Peter Meisel
