Dixiefrog: 35 Years of the Blues Label in 10 Albums

by Stéphane Deschamps

The Dixiefrog label was founded in Paris in 1986 by lovers of American country, folk and blues. Thirty-five years later, the label keeps on keepin’ on, with its impressive catalogue (about 450 releases) and passion intact. Dixiefrog specialises in the blues, with a largely American and French roster of loyal artists and open artistic horizons. It’s impossible to capture all the interesting Dixiefrog albums here, but these 10 are absolutely essential.

Compilation Dixiefrog Presents Black & White, Recorded in the Field by Art Rosenbaum (2010)
Unlike other labels, Dixiefrog has not dabbled much in compilations/reissues. To the label’s credit, most of its releases are contemporary albums by living artists. Among the few exceptions is this compilation of recordings made in the field by American folklorist Art Rosenbaum. Starting out in 1956 this colleague of Alan Lomax spent half a century in the field, recording hundreds of amateur musicians, black and white, in every style possible, from religious singing to children’s lullabies, blues and cowboy songs. The box set of his recordings released in 2007 by the Dust-to-Digital label won a Grammy Award. This compilation album of recordings by Art Rosenbaum offers the French audience a little reminder: the best American folk can often be found around the corner, far from studios and commercial productions.

Leyla McCalla - Vari-Colored Songs (2013)
Another lovely story: a young American cellist with Haitian roots leaves the stress and strain of New York behind for the bohemian vibe of New Orleans. She is discovered playing Bach suites in the street, and reaches full bloom with this debut album based on traditional Haitian songs and lyrics by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. It’s as gorgeous as springtime in New Orleans, this city with half its soul in the Caribbean and the other half in the USA, at once timeless and new, fresh and sophisticated. Like her young friends in old-time string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Leyla McCalla knows how to transform history and culture into musical pleasure, in songs that express her life story as much as a collective heritage. A revelation and instant favourite, the album was originally released by Dixiefrog and recently reissued in the U.S. by Smithsonian Folkways: no small honour.

Gashouse Dave - Blues Trip (2009)
Some bluesmen are illiterate, signing their name with an X, or a guitar riff. Gashouse Dave, on the other hand, is more the hyper-literate type. From the first seconds of this album, one of the handful he recorded for Dixiefrog, you know you’re dealing with a writer, who happens to use a steel guitar rather than a typewriter. He often doesn’t really sing, reciting and intoning tales that you’d imagine being dreamed up in the shadow of a roadside bar in Los Angeles, Memphis or Paris – where he once lived, like a good literate American. So Gashouse Dave is a bit of a dandy, with a detached tone but nonetheless solidly anchored in a deep, hypnotic blues. A little bit of a crossover, hanging out on the borderline, his music can evoke John Lurie, John Lee Hooker and Tav Falco, with a twist of David Lynch… Sensual, sharp, shrewd, elegant, a little eccentric and always spellbinding.

Watermelon Slim - Golden Boy (2017)
Think of Watermelon Slim (real name Bill Homans) as a bit like an alternate-reality Keith Richards, if he’d been American and never met the rest of the Rolling Stones; if his life had been rags instead of riches and the jet-set. Now in his eighth decade on Earth, the jaw is chiselled, the guitar sound firm, the songs and stories lived-in. The odometer may have racked up the miles, but he’s always ready to get back on the road. On this uber-roots album, Watermelon Slim reconnects with the old natural magic of field recordings, songs rooted in old-timey gospel, down-and-out blues. Playing harmonica and guitar, he sings as though he had rum babas stuffed in his cheeks, with more rum than baba. The toothless grandpa has style, and he’s never limited to one genre, tracing the blues back to Native American roots. No matter what musical sky he’s under, it’s always Slim we hear. It’s the kind of album that tightens the throat and brings a tear to the eye.

Neal Black & The Healers - A Little Boom Boom Boom (2020)

And the slogan for 2020 was: Stay Home. That message rang loud and clear for Popa Chubby and Neal Black, two historic Dixiefrog artists: after a few years on another label, Popa Chubby returned to the fold, while Neal Black never left. He released his first album on Dixiefrog in 1993, followed by a dozen more, and returned in 2020 with the excellent A Little Boom Boom Boom, a cool new electric blues manifesto. Born in Texas in an embroidered western shirt and size 19 crocodile boots, Neal Black has blues-rock running through his veins. After 25 years in the biz, he may not revolutionise the genre, but he knows how to keep it alive and evolving. Guitar is the star on this album, whether hooky and lyrical BB King style, or more rhythmic and swampy. The horns do the Texas boogie with the harmonica, as the master of ceremonies sings like a wise old sage…
