Vilde Frang’s Homage is more than a captivating programme of short pieces for violin and piano, it is also a homage to the players of the Golden Age of the Violin, such as Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Auer and Joseph Szigeti. Vilde Frang has conceived the album as something of a homage to her illustrious predecessors. Born in 1986, she is clearly very much a violinist of today, and – as a Norwegian trained in Germany – she did not grow up in the Central and Eastern-European tradition of Heifetz, Kreisler, Auer and Szigeti. That being said, she brings her own, distinctively captivating magic to her instrument. © Warner Classics

It's often said that opposites attract. On that basis, Vilde Frang has gambled on bringing together Schubert and Paganini onto one record. Far from trying to measure these composers against each other in terms of virtuosity, the Swedish violinist turns a spotlight onto their shared love of song. Sandwiched between two Caprices – the first by Paganini (Capriccio, Op. 38 after the aria Nel cor più non mi sento from La Molinara by Paisiello); and the latter by Ernst (the Grand Caprice, Op. 26, in a breathtaking transcription for solo violin based on Erlkönig) – Vilde Frang's recital deploys an incredible armada of assets in service of the music. She moves from one mode of playing to the other as if it was nothing. This confounding facility makes us forget the imposing technical demands made by the scores recorded here: Paganini's of course, but also Schubert's work. And she doesn't overburden the moving fragility of, for example, the opening of the Fantasie in C major, D.934.We should take a moment to salute pianist Michail Lifits – whom we have already seen play Prokofiev alongside Alexandra Conunova for Aparté. In the second movement Allegretto, piano and violin converse cheerily, with a grace that brings out every bit of these two much-decorated musicians' even, firm temperament. The mismatched writing recalls the Scherzo from Beethoven's Frühlingssonate, Op. 24, with added Schubertian melancholy, and further underlines the complicity between our musicians.Marvellously contrasted, these works provide a choice terrain for this incredible violinist, Vilde Frang. She follows her heart and her... caprices, to create the most varied atmospheres. Her interpretation of this Erlkönig howls like an icy blast in the dead of winter and takes your breath away. Laughter turns to horror. But a deliciously perfected horror! © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz

The Lockenhaus International Chamber Music Festival is regarded as one of Austria’s most prestigious festivals: it was created by the violinist Gidon Kremer to offer a new vision of chamber music and the opportunity to create musical exchanges in an intimate setting. The cellist Nicolas Altstaedt succeeded Gidon Kremer in 2012 and now continues the spirit of the festival. For this first recording in partnership with Lockenhaus, he is joined by experienced partners, including the Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang, the Hungarian violinist Barnabás Kelemen, the German pianist Alexander Lonquich – whose Schubert double album was recently released on Alpha – and the British violist Lawrence Power. Together they have selected two works, the Piano Quintet of Béla Bartók, a demanding composition, rarely performed even though it is considered an intensely personal work, and the String Trio of Sándor Veress, a former student of Bartók. Nicolas Altstaedt has joined Alpha for several recording projects that will illustrate the full range of his talents, in a highly eclectic range of music. © Alpha Classics

Booklet Onderscheidingen Gramophone Record of the Month
"From Korngold’s Romantic patchwork to Britten’s high seriousness (and his obsessive working of scalic material) is quite a leap, yet, with these exponents, there’s no hint of the latter overreaching himself in this extended, bleakly eloquent take on the Prokofiev violin concerto model. Indeed, the argument is projected with such searing intensity that the work asserts its claim to be considered one of the masterpieces of the last century. Once again Frang proves immaculate above the stave; and, because the third-movement passacaglia never gets bogged down in the manner of Vengerov and Rostropovich or Little and Gardner, the sense of looming threat is ever present through to the equivocal close. While Marwood and Volkov make the whole concerto feel more contemporary, brisker from the outset, texturally spikier and more fractured than Lubotsky with Britten himself as conductor, there are other aesthetic possibilities. Whatever the work’s pockets of English reserve, Frang refuses to undersell those passionate outbursts fuelled by the composer’s political and moral convictions during and after the Spanish Civil War. This is a remarkable rendition, at once spacious and tautly held together, cool where it needs to be but eminently emotive with just the right kind of ‘perilous sweetness’. The soloist’s tone is never remotely wiry or frayed and the harmonics are simply sensational." Gramophone, 2016
