Korngold began work on his Violin Concerto in 1937, following his father’s suggestion that the main theme from his score for the Errol Flynn epic Another Dawn would make a good basis for a concerto. The work remained dormant while Korngold was exiled to Hollywood after the Anschluss. He resumed work on it in 1945, and fully revised it. Premiered by Jascha Heifetz in 1947, the Concerto is widely performed and recorded, and is certainly Korngold’s best-known concert work. Widely considered the greatest composer-prodigy since Mozart, Korngold composed the String Sextet in 1914, when he was only seventeen years old. It shows his fully developed style and assured idiomatic writing for the ensemble. Andrew Haveron leads the Sinfonia of London Chamber Ensemble in the Sextet, and is joined by John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the Violin Concerto. © Chandos Records

Sir Arthur Sullivan achieved worldwide fame as the composer who joined librettist W. S. Gilbert to create the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. However, his success with these "Savoy Operas" has overshadowed his other works, including a considerable amount of music for the theatre that was wildly successful in its day. Sullivan’s suites of incidental music for Shakespeare are among his most attractive compositions, with Henry VIII becoming extremely popular. Charles Dickens was "perfectly enchanted" by The Sapphire Necklace, and the Overture in C is both a memorial for Sullivan’s father and a celebration of Victorian Britain. © Naxos

Soon after his return from studies in Leipzig, Sir Arthur Sullivan wrote his second work, L’Île enchantée. This was a ballet score on the subject of a shipwrecked mariner which debuted at Covent Garden in the form of a divertissement at the end of Bellini’s La sonnambula, where it was received with acclaim. This premiere recording restores passages Sullivan cut when presenting the work for concert performances. Thespis, a collaboration with W. S. Gilbert, is a flamboyant opera cum pantomime of which only fragments now remain - the work’s lost ballet has been rediscovered and restored by Roderick Spencer and Selwyn Tillett. © Naxos

Booklet
This Marco Polo CD offers premiere recordings of the suites from the film scores for Story of a Flemish Farm and Coastal Command. (Chandos issued a recording of the former work in 2005.) Neither of these World War II-inspired works is a great masterpiece, for while there are compelling moments ("U-boat Alert" and "Battle of the Beauforts" from Coastal Command, and "The Wanderings of the Flag" from Flemish Farm, to cite just three cues) the music elsewhere at times utters pale echoes from some of the composer's symphonies, especially No. 4 and No. 6. But even here the music is atmospheric and programmatically effective, especially in its scoring. A somewhat more worthwhile effort is Portraits (3) from the England of Elizabeth, an arrangement by Muir Mathieson of music from the film score The England of Elizabeth (1957). The suite is quite engaging in the festivity and exoticism of the opening "Explorer," in the stately lyricism of the "Poet," and in the colorful regality of the closing movement "Queen." The orchestration is imaginative throughout and the melodies distinctive. The work was previously recorded by André Previn and the LSO for RCA. Penny and this Dublin-based ensemble are nearly as convincing, playing with reasonable precision and spirit here and in all works, including the disc's opening cue, the very memorable prelude (later turned into a rousing patriotic song) from The 49th Parallel. The sound is open and clear, but lacks a bit of depth. © TiVo
