Huw Wiggin
The English saxophonist Huw Wiggin is one of the few players of his instrument to have made a full-time living in the field. In addition to performing in major concert venues, he is on the faculty of the Royal Academy of Music and often performs on cruise ships. Wiggin was born in Reading, England, in 1986, and grew up in nearby Shiplake. Strongly attracted to performing from the beginning ("It’s almost like a drug -- you just get into it and you can’t live without it, basically," he has said), he benefited from free music lessons at Trinity Primary School in Henley, studying recorder and cello before settling on the saxophone. Wiggin moved on to Chethams School of Music and then to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where his teachers were Andrew Wilson and Rob Buckland. He graduated with First-Class Honors in 2008 and earned a scholarship from Germany DAAD exchange agency to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with Daniel Gauthier. Returning to England he attended the Royal College of Music, studying with Kyle Horch and earning a Master's degree. While there, he won the school's concerto prize and performed the Tableaux de Provence of Paule Maurice on an associated concert; the work recurred on Wiggin's debut album. With several major scholarships and prizes under his belt, including status as selected artist with the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Wiggin was signed to the Park Lane Group agency and began to appear at top-rank venues soon after his graduation from the RCM in 2012. These have included the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, and, in a performance of Darius Milhaud's Scaramouche suite, at his hometown Henley Festival. Motivated by a desire to travel, Wiggin has given concerts on the Cunard and C&O cruise ship lines, dividing his time among that work, concert appearance, and his teaching duties. Wiggin released his debut recital, Reflections, with pianist John Lenehan on the Orchid label in 2018.
