John Mulaney

An Emmy-winning TV writer and a comedic actor, John Mulaney is best known as a standup comedian. Usually performing clean-cut and wearing a suit, his confident, deadpan delivery is at odds with his observational humor, which pokes fun at everyday absurdities as well as his own behaviors and often misplaced anxieties. After making his Comedy Central Records debut in 2009 with The Top Part, he built his reputation as a television writer, including writing for Saturday Night Live for four seasons beginning that same year. He topped the Billboard comedy chart in 2012 with the standup album New in Town before starring in his own sitcom, Mulaney (2014-2015). In 2018, he returned to SNL, but as host. He won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for 2018's Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, an award he won again for 2023's Baby J, his fifth standup special. With his unique balance of showman's charm and self-depreciation intact, the latter was a darker, storytelling-oriented show that detailed his experiences with an intervention and stint in rehab. A fan of sketch comedy and sitcoms from childhood, the Chicago native studied English lit at Georgetown University before moving to New York City with plans to pursue work in comedy. He got an office job at Comedy Central and, after working there for about a year, pitched the idea for a spoof of VH1's I Love the '80s. He went on to develop I Love the '30s for Comedy Central with Nick Kroll and Brian Donovan. New episodes of the shorts ran on the network from 2005-2008 and brought him to the attention of other writer/comedians, including Mike Birbiglia and Demetri Martin, who hired him to write for TV projects. Mulaney auditioned for Saturday Night Live in the summer of 2008 and was offered a job on the writing staff. On his first week off from the show, he flew to San Francisco and recorded his first comedy album, The Top Part, at the Punch Line. It was released by Comedy Central Records in March of 2009 and earned a dedicated fan base with his long-form stories about things like past struggles with alcohol and his obsession with the TV show Law & Order. Mulaney took home his first Emmy in 2011 for co-writing Justin Timberlake's May 21, 2011 SNL monologue with Timberlake, Seth Meyers, and Katreese Barnes. They won for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. During his time with the show, he also created and wrote for the popular Bill Hader character Stefon. His Comedy Central special New in Town arrived in January 2012 and got an audio release by Comedy Central Records. By then a well-known entity to comedy fans, it reached number one on the Billboard Comedy Albums chart. In the fall of 2013, the Fox network picked up his multi-camera sitcom Mulaney. Mirroring Seinfeld, each episode opened with a segment of standup, with Mulaney playing a comedian living in New York City. The series, which co-starred Nasim Pedrad of SNL, Seaton Smith, Elliott Gould, and Martin Short, ran for 13 episodes before it was canceled in 2015. In the meantime, Mulaney appeared as a regular on Kroll's Kroll Show, and guested on late-night programs including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Myers, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His third standup special, The Comeback Kid, premiered on Netflix in late 2015 and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. In September 2016, Mulaney and Kroll made their Broadway debuts in Oh, Hello. The comedy show centered on two middle-aged characters, George St. Geegland and Gil Faizon, that the duo had tested in clubs in the 2000s and later on Kroll Show. After Oh, Hello closed its run in January 2017, a comedy album version of The Comeback Kid was released on Drag City. Mulaney toured theaters with his next standup show, Kid Gorgeous, in late 2017 through April of 2018, when he returned to New York to host an episode of Saturday Night Live. The appearance made him the fourth SNL writer, following Conan O'Brien, Louis C.K., and Larry David, to return as host without having been a cast member. Filmed at a stop at Radio City Music Hall, the Netflix special Kid Gorgeous at Radio City premiered a month later and went on to earn an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. The show received a multi-format release in September 2018, also on Drag City, which peaked at number two on Billboard's comedy chart. He reached number five with the soundtrack to his next special, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch. A send-up of classic live-action children's TV, it premiered on Netflix in December 2019 with singing guests including David Byrne, André De Shields, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Featuring original songs by composer Eli Bolin, Mulaney, and show co-writer Marika Sawyer (SNL), John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. In September of 2020, Mulaney checked himself into rehab for treatment of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription drug addictions, then he left treatment a month later to host SNL for his fourth time. Following a relapse, friends later revealed to include Kroll, Seth Myers, Fred Armisen, and others staged an intervention for Mulaney in December that led to a two-month stint in rehab; both experiences would form the basis for his next comedy special. In the meantime, he ended his six-year marriage, and he and actress Olivia Munn welcomed their first child in late 2021. Mulaney returned to SNL for a fifth hosting shift in February 2022, which he followed with appearances on episodes of Peacock's Bupkis and Hulu's The Bear in 2023. Filmed before a sold-out crowd at Boston’s Symphony Hall in February of that year, his fifth standup special, Baby J, detailed his experiences surrounding addiction and recovery in longform style. Featuring music by David Byrne, the 80-minute special premiered on Netflix in April 2023 and went on to win him the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special in early 2024. In May of that year, Drag City made Baby J available on vinyl and CD formats. Also in May, the writer/comedian launched the limited series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA, a meta, talk show-styled series featuring a succession of marquee guests.
