Atlanta rapper Ken Car$on takes notes on his sound from his affiliate (and the CEO of his label OPIUM Records) Playboi Carti, riding dense and synth-heavy beats with raps doused in slippery Auto-Tune. This brand of production was laced with melodic hooks and traces of pop on Car$on's 2021 album Project X, but it veers into more stark and aggressive territory on the 2022 follow-up X. Car$on is joined by Destroy Lonely on the oozing "MDMA" and the relentless "Murda Musik," and Homixide Gang shows up on "Delinquent." Taken a track at a time, X aspires to the dark psychedelia that Carti excels at and some of his followers have taken to different places, but the entirety of this 20-song, 48-minute-long project quickly blurs into an exhausting slog of interchangeable beats and vapid vocal performances. The production is interchangeable to the point of it being difficult to be sure where one song ends and the next begins, or if a subtle variation of the same synth pattern from a few tracks earlier is showing up again and again as the record goes on. This repetitive production taken in tandem with Car$on's often listless and uninspired lyricism (and flows that sometimes struggle to even stay on beat) makes X a largely hollow and forgettable affair.
