Kurt Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins, a "sung ballet," is here given in its German original, Die sieben Todsünden, despite all the English on the packaging. It is a unique version, made in the 1950s for Lotte Lenya, with the part in her lead role of Anna transferred down a fourth, but here returned to its original range. The singer here is Magdalena Kožená, whom one wouldn't have figured to be a natural in this material, but she inhabits the role fully. Anna travels, sometimes incarnated as a dancer, to seven American cities (at this point, neither Weill nor librettist Bertolt Brecht had ever visited the U.S.), where she encounters the titular sins and is satirically judged for them by a chorus-like family. The conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in this live 2022 concert is Simon Rattle, who has actually recorded this work before and seems to have a particular affection for it. One might take the interpretation of the music a step in the direction of musical theater, but it works well here, and Rattle keeps the rather pageant-like plot moving. The work is also accompanied by a series of other Weill works. The LSO Live sound is good, and physical album buyers, unlike others of the London Symphony's own releases, get an impressive booklet with lots of info about the performers and the music. For Weill fans, this is an important release, and really, anyone could enjoy it.
