Baroque composers were famous for recycling good music, and their interpreter Harry Christophers has done the same thing: these are not new recordings but pieces from the past, repackaged and repurposed for a 2018 tour featuring the Vivaldi Gloria in G major, RV 589. The Vivaldi was recorded at St. John's, Smith Square way back in 1991. The music from Handel's Esther, HWV 50, and the Bach Mass in G major, BWV 236, is somewhat newer; the Handel was recorded in 1995, and the Bach comparatively recently in 2013. For the Handel and the Vivaldi, this is the third go-round. There's nothing wrong with this, and although no remastering credit is given, the three recordings -- all originally produced by Mark Brown -- hold together reasonably well sonically. Artistically, the picture is not so clear: although the Bach-Handel-Vivaldi trio is a strong idea in principle, here you have The Eight instead of The Sixteen for the Bach mass, The Eighteen for the Handel, and The Sixteen as promised for the Vivaldi. Of course, The Sixteen have always been a flexible grouping, but the Bach, a sparse Missa brevis, is a different kind of work from the Vivaldi and the Handel. The good news is that the Bach, with its lilting treatment, is the strongest of the three pieces. This is worthwhile for those hearing this music in concert from The Sixteen, although probably not a first choice for those in search of the music itself.
