Vanguard Visionaries recycles ten tracks originally released in the late '60s and early '70s taken from Country Joe McDonald's solo albums for the label, including the essential Thinking of Woody Guthrie. Following the years of playing psychedelic music with the Fish, McDonald returned to his country-folk roots, showcased here by the inclusion of the Guthrie penned standards "Talkin' Dust Bowl," and "This Land Is Your Land," along with "Six Days on the Road" and "Ring of Fire." The music is timeless, but the packaging of this series is third-rate. Considering the lack of liner notes, and the recordings being easily obtainable, there's no reason to purchase this generic compilation even at a midline price.
