In de jaren tachtig en negentig was Swans een belangrijke band in de indiescene. Maar in 1997 wordt de groep rond zanger en muzikant Michael Gira opgeheven. In 2010 begint de formatie aan een tweede leven in 2014 verschijnt het dertiende Swans-album To Be Kind. De sfeer van de composities is nog steeds donker, maar wel is de uitwerking van de songs subtieler dan in het verleden en worden de nieuwe nummer gekenmerkt door een zeer dynamische productie.
