Composed, recorded and mixed by Krister Linder, the music of this film noir is, after Metropia in 2009, the second collaboration between Linder and director Tarik Saleh, a Swede of Egyptian descent. As indicated by its title, the movie takes place in Saleh’s country of origin, shortly before the Arab Spring, in January 2011. In parallel with describing a country in turmoil, the director depicts a police investigation interfered with by the protests on Tahrir Square. What Linder’s music reflects above all is not so much the sense of urgency in the staging, but rather the description of a society sullied by corruption, a mood of heavy dampness that is translated by the synth pads created by this Swedish composer living in New York. The intervention of a highly reverberated piano in a piece like Intricate Falsity brings a touch of light to this infinitely dark painting. Just like the cop brilliantly played by Fares Fares who goes out of his way to find the truth about the murder of a singer, and just like the Egyptian people who start hatching a plan of how to burst the corrupted society, Linder’s partition seems to try to extract itself from an ambient pessimism in order to find a glimmer of hope here and there, notably through this distant piano (that we also hear in the beautiful Heavy Wings). Linder’s artful use of synth pads culminates with the track Facing The Inevitable, in which he blends sounds both very alarming—often vague and muted—and repetitive and consoling arpeggios, played on metallophones. This ambient soundtrack ends with a particularly captivating song, also dominated by synth pads, and performed by Ibtihal El Serety (Gina’s Song). © NM/Qobuz
