Daniel-Ben Pienaar is not the first artist to play 17th century keyboard music on the piano, but nobody has done it with quite the variety of sounds and approaches he manages here. Two CDs worth of short keyboard pieces from this era might seem a lot, but Pienaar holds the listener's interest and much more. He divides the repertory into four types, which he terms "Intimation and Imitation" (these are polyphonic pieces), "Dance," "Variation," and "Depiction and Evocation" (representational works). National styles have relevance in the music of the 17th century, but these general principles cross national boundaries, and Pienaar's program allows the listener to hear the tremendous variety of ways composers approached these basic compositional problems. Most of the music is fairly obscure, and there are some real gems, like Giovanni Maria Trabaci's highly chromatic Gagliarda Seconda, a combination of the dance and polyphonic ideas, and the extremely virtuosic Variations on "La Capricciosa" of Dietrich Buxtehude. The pieces were written for a variety of keyboard instruments, and looked at one way, the piano is a kind of compromise between them; Pienaar applies some pianistic sounds, but he's hardly a Glenn Gould. Yet he's not neutral, either. He uses the piano to bring out the expressive devices in the music, often with extraordinary effect. The piano becomes almost an investigative tool in this superb release by one of the most original pianists on the current scene.

In your panoramas...
The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

Peter Thomas in Orbit

In Germany they have their own Michel Legrand: his name is Peter Thomas! His eccentric film music left its mark on a whole generation of viewers in the 60s and 70s and since the 90s he has often been cited and sampled by young pop groups. The cult composer passed away on May 17th, 2020. We met him three years earlier, on the dawn of his 92nd birthday.
