Ten years into an underground career that has seen the Impossible Shapes release an avalanche of extremely obscure, sometimes cassette-only albums that often veer into chaotic noise, the most subversive thing the Bloomington, Indiana-based band could do is release a conventional album's worth of relatively straightforward pop songs. THE IMPOSSIBLE SHAPES is the band's most direct and pop-oriented album yet, 11 tracks' worth of spacy psychedelic pop, including such gems as the Apples In Stereo-like rocker, "A New Way To Have Fun," and the Syd Barrett-style rumination, "Make Art." This is the Impossible Shapes' best starting point for a newcomer.
