It's a bit hard to pin down the "Janoska style," even if one reads the section with that heading on the group's website, but the Janoska Ensemble has gained considerable popularity in Vienna, and that popularity seems likely to spread with The Big B's, whose title refers to Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Bartók. There is other music on the album, too, some of it in a more popular or folkish vein, and it follows seamlessly on the classical favorites. Perhaps the best way to think about this music is to compare it to the small ensembles that plied Viennese cafés a century and a quarter ago. In an era mostly before recordings, they played classical pieces and helped bring them into general circulation, but they also played music from the Hungarian and Slavic lands that bordered Austria-Hungary, popular songs of the day, and perhaps music of their own composition. All these types are represented in the Janoska Ensemble's program here, with the newly composed pieces charmingly dedicated to the children of members of this family group. The nine-in-one rendition of Beethoven's symphonies at the end is the only place where the music perhaps seems gimmicky, but it is not impossible to imagine someone like Jenő Hubay having attempted something similar. So, one might think of The Big B's as an updated take on Viennese café music, quite virtuosically played, imaginative, and fresh.
