The 14-track compilation The Best of the Christians is pretty much all one needs by this minor Liverpool pop-soul group fronted by singing brothers Gary and Russell Christian with keyboardist/songwriter Henry Priestman (ex-Yachts). Leading off with the trifecta of their superb cover of the Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World" and their own biggest hits, "Ideal World" and "Hooverville," the compilation rarely reaches those heights again, but the album as a whole is filled with pleasant, disposable pop-soul of a specifically late-'80s stripe. (Think Paul Young fronting Simply Red.) More earnest and socially conscious than romantic, the Christians are in the Bobby Womack and Curtis Mayfield mold lyrically, but Priestman's tunes rarely fall under the purview of funk, or even straight R&B. At heart, the Christians were a pure chart pop group, making inoffensive but largely unmemorable songs. Listening to The Best of the Christians is enjoyable and often diverting, but it's hard to remember many of the songs half an hour later.
