Stalwart New York singer/songwriter Richard Julian is in an expansive mood on SUNDAY MORNING IN SATURDAY'S SHOES. His SLOW NEW YORK (2005) was a spare, ballad-dominated album with a hushed, intimate vibe, but here Julian opens out into fuller production and broader dynamics. As ever, his incisive lyrics and elegantly unfurling melodies mark him as one of the inheritors of the Paul Simon mantle, a trenchant New York troubadour constantly challenging himself by upping the compositional ante. From wry humor (“Syndicated”) to unabashed, bittersweet beauty (“A Thousand Days”), SUNDAY MORNING shows a master craftsman at the peak of his powers.
