Released on September 19, 1996, the first album from the British band composed of Victoria Adams (future Mrs. Beckham), Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton rapidly became a larger-than-life social phenomenon, to the point that the term Spicemania was coined, in reference to the famous Beatlemania of the 1960s. Buoyed by the single (or rather, the anthem) Wannabe, the album sold 18 million copies in just one year. The idea was to concoct a 100% pop record, to which genres as diverse as hip-hop (Wannabe), R&B (Say You'll Be There) and disco (Who Do You Think You Are) all made a contribution. This pop music is literally 'spiced' with various styles: this approach inevitably led to a sparkling, colourful result, reflecting the group's range of personalities. Like Madonna in the same era, who drew inspiration from counter-culture movements for her mainstream projects (e.g. voguing in 1990), the Spice Girls drew inspiration from the Riot Grrrls movement, a punk and feminist community of American origin. In other words, this album asserted a powerful feminism ("Girl Power"), with music that was no less powerful itself. Within this framework, throughout Spice, we come across themes as diverse as losing one’s virginity (Last Time Lover) or contraception (2 Become 1).
