Mourn is a talented Catalan quartet made up of Carla Pérez Vas (vocals and guitar), Jazz Rodríguez Bueno (vocals and guitar), Antonio Postius (drums) and Leia Rodríguez (bassist). Charming, but not as well behaved as their well-mannered teenage faces might suggest. They define themselves as “four nerds playing music and shit at the doors of hell.” After a first eponymous album, followed by Ha, Ha, He in 2016, they are releasing their third rebellious and savage creation on the label Captured Tracks. With Sorpresa Familia, they assert their place on the rock scene as well as their musical maturity. They’ve become the voice of the youth, inviting them to rebel and fall for aggressive passions they’ll need to overcome. Like an older brother figure who would advise his younger sibling, Mourn have realize their ability and power to perform an energetic and slightly de-structured form of rock, and aim to bring their audience along on the course of their evolution. This big flat-share of young adults introduces itself in Barcelona City Tour and wastes no time setting the tone: “They may shut up, but I stand up!”. Undeniably overflowing with energy, Mourn also use music like a private diary, evoking with subtle sensitivity much more personal themes such as frustration, desolation, sorrow, the lack of understanding, anger. Divorce for instance speaks to 19-year-olds facing conflicts, while Orange, in the shape of an electric lullaby, reflects on solitude.
