Béla Bartok composed his Sonata for violinsolo (1944) after emigrating from Hungaryto the USA on the outbreak of WorldWar II. A few years before, he had openlyexpressed his aversion to Hitler and therise of the Nazis, refusing to play his ownmusic or have it performed in Germany.Bartókwas consequently boycotted almosteverywhere, particularly in pro-Germancountries. Political developments in Hungaryand surrounding dictatorships becamesuch an unbearable torment, that after longhesitation he said farewell to his fatherland(and to his mother). In North America, however, the composer and his wife couldhardly settle. For many years Bart.k did notcompose, and he felt that he would neverbe able to do so again. He darted throughthe overcrowded streets of New York likean anxious animal. He felt like a miserableand uprooted stranger, became ill, andweighed hardly 44 kilos in 1943. Bartókdied of leukaemia in New York in 1945
