Even if his name has appeared on multiple ECM albums (John Abercrombie, Marc Johnson, Steve Kuhn, Paul Motian, etc.), Joe Lovano has until now never had the chance to be the leader of a record for Manfred Eicher’s label. At 66 years old, the saxophonist from Cleavland is finally the boss on Trio Tapestry which has been put together with pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi. It’s a formation without a double bass that offers the inner power of an orchestra.

Less voluble than usual, here Lovano throws himself into quite intimate narratives. “This trio”, he stated, “is a melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical tapestry which creates moods and atmospheres.” This group is above all an ambassador for a colourful style of jazz. Spirituality and calmness underline each improvisation. We continue to wonder as to why Crispell isn’t a more well-know and praised musician. Following in the footsteps of Paul Bley and Cecil Taylor, she brings her piano into contemporary music territory laced with lyricism and proves that she is an essential member of this group which is equipped with a stunning creative force. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Saxophone: The tenor’s big names

How did the saxophone, this instrument invented by a Belgian for military orchestras, become reserved to one genre? How did jazzmen get their hands on Adolphe Sax’s invention? This is the first part of a series devoted to the instrument’s giants, starting with the tenor—pay honor where honor is due— and its many adepts, from Coleman Hawkins to Wayne Shorter.

Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

Santana: The Tijuana Lizard

Santana’s CV boasts an iconic Woodstock performance, a dozen Grammy Awards, millions of record sales (thanks to his metamorphosis into a Latin pop star), and more and more prestigious collaborations... He’s one of those artists that everyone loves - peers, public and critics alike. Here, we explore the life of an accomplished artist who is constantly renewing himself, much like a lizard shedding its skin.
