Complete recordings of the Schubert string quartets are far less common than surveys of the quartets of Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and the like. This is perhaps due to the fact that although Schubert completed an impressive 15 quartets, all but the final four are sometimes viewed as juvenile works. Schubert's adolescent compositions, however, are equally as refined as some composer's "mature" works, so it's a loss to listeners who have not had the opportunity to hear Schubert's complete cycle. The cleverly named Quatuor Sine Nomine presents the complete 15 quartets in this Cascavelle box set. Schubert's quartet's changed drastically from the first written in 1810 to the last written in 1826; so, too, does Sine Nomine's approach to the music. Its performance of the early quartets captures the lighthearted, jovial, almost carefree sensibilities while the intensity and gravitas of the late four quartets (three of which are in a minor key) are played with solemnity, passion, and authoritative conviction. Though perhaps a bit lacking in bass sound, the quartet's sound blends nicely and each of the voices is clearly audible throughout. Intonation is solid, articulation is even and consistent across the quartet's members, and they seem to have a clear idea of how they wish to portray Schubert's growth as a composer and an individual as they progress from quartet to quartet. Cascavelle's sound is clear, though a bit distant. Sine Nomine's survey is a suitable choice for collectors, as well as those who have not had the pleasure of enjoying the complete cycle of Schubert's quartets.
