There are real pluses and minuses to this assembled collection of both of Santana's instrumental compilations. If you already own both, read no further. If you are contemplating them, this would be the way to go, but there are some drawbacks. While virtually all of the music to be found on the Instrumentals volumes, one and two, is indispensable, the packaging leaves a lot to be desired: there are no liner notes, for starters, but that's far from the worst offense. There are no track annotations! That's right, the listener has no way of knowing which recording a certain track was taken from, who the personnel was, or when it was released because these tunes are arranged thematically, not chronologically. To make matters worse, the masters are the original ones for CD, and the tracks are not taken from remastered versions of the albums they came from. If you know your Santana, or if pristine digital sound is not a priority for you, you would more than likely do well to pick these up since the price point is excellent.
