Richard Strauss' Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64, is a bit less often performed than the other major Strauss tone poems due to its sheer demands: 120 musicians, offstage trumpets, and wind parts so strenuous that Strauss suggested the players could use a newly invented wind machine to play them if desired. A cynic might claim that this is possibly the least relaxing stroll in the Alps in existence, but its various stages are extraordinarily vivid once one accepts the overheated quality of the thing. Herbert von Karajan's magisterial early 1980s version with the Berlin Philharmonic remains the standard, but Vasily Petrenko, leading his Oslo Philharmonic, gives him strong competition here. Petrenko has conducted the work many times, with the Oslo group and with various English orchestras, and his reading has a remarkable combination of forward motion and detail, slightly quicker than usual but never rushed. The Berlin strings may be silkier as the walker reaches the peak in "Auf dem Gipfel" and in the "Vision" that follows, but the "Gewitter und Sturm" here has a startling immediacy. Nor does Petrenko neglect the long line: although Eine Alpensinfonie and Tod und Verklärung, Op. 24, are tone poems, each has aspects of symphonic form, elegantly delineated here. Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) was referred to by Strauss on his deathbed, who remarked that dying was just as he had composed it, and here, Petrenko gets the hushed, mystic quality at the end. This album concludes Petrenko's short and generally acclaimed cycle of Strauss tone poems, and it's an important statement from a major conductor.

Neoclassicism: The New World Between Classical Music and Electro

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.

Sofia Coppola on Air

To celebrate 20 years since the release of her film “The Virgin Suicides”, Qobuz takes a look back at some of the top musical moments from the films of Sofia Coppola, like her collaborations with French duo Air or Thomas Mars from the band Phoenix.

Bruno Walter, Memories of a Departed Legend

Listening to Bruno Walter’s recordings, in light of the splendid remastered editions published by Sony Classical, you tap into a truly humanistic culture. A tremendous conductor, music was his vocation, a way of life and an art of thought. His recordings have conserved his art vocal music, intense but never sentimental, thanks to a clear linearity complemented by a versatile rhythm, ensuring clarity, coherence and vigour.
