Alhoewel opgericht door John Grant en Chris Pearson samen, was The Czars altijd Grants band, en oogstte de groep de meeste lof omwille van zijn diepe stem en songwriting. De frontman botste kennelijk teveel met zijn vier bandleden, maar die creatieve spanning hielp om The Czars te vormen tot een eclectische groep, en Grants stem – ondanks dat het de hoeksteen van elk Czars album was – zou niet zo goed uit de verf zijn gekomen zonder die dromerige, shoegaze muziek er omheen. Op Queen of Denmark, zijn eerste release zonder The Czars, horen we hem samenwerken met Midlake, wat wederom resulteert in een collaboratief album wat zijn mosterd weghaalt bij jaren 70 softrock en aparte Americana.
