This new addition to the vast and fascinating AMERICAN CLASSICS collection published by Naxos presents us with the string quartets of Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) and Leo Sowerby (1895-1968), two composers for whom the city of Chicago was the backdrop to their careers. This is also the case for the Avalon Quartet, who have distinguished themselves as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in the United States. Florence Beatrice Price was the first African-American female composer to write a symphony that went on to be played by one of the most well-known orchestras in the US. Extremely prolific, she is the writer of three string quartets. Her “Quartet N° 2,” composed in 1935 and featured on this recording, uses harmonies and themes from traditional American folk music, whose similarity to Dvorak’s New World Symphony leads us to believe that the two composers must have drawn from the same sources. This also seems to be evidenced by the discovery of her “Five Folksongs in Counterpoint,” which she composed in 1951. Through its Debussy-like harmonies, Leo Sowerby’s “Quartet in G Minor ''clearly expresses his admiration for and affiliation with the French music that the composer discovered during his time in Paris in the early 1920’s. He is also the first composer to receive the Rome Prize awarded by the American Academy in Rome, founded on the model of the Villa Medici’s French Academy. © François Hudry/Qobuz
